I have home legal cover through a rental property (covers personal issues also) and they've been helpful with advice. I've not gone the full hog and requested a review to see if a solicitor can take over - the 'is there more than 51% chance of winning' rule.
Be very careful. If the union find out you have been seeking legal advice elsewhere they will withdraw all support.

That said, and to repeat what I said a bit earlier, you are going to need an expert opinion and any insurance / union will only fund a case that they consider has a better than evens chance of being won. It may come down to deciding who you go with, it can only be one or the other.
