How to decipher Asda codes on fresh produce?

Asda have removed the expiry dates from sealed bags of kale. This is a problem for me, as I have severe food intolerances and kale is one of the few green vegetables I can eat. In a week, I usually go through 4 bags. In the past, I'd always buy the ones with the later dates and they'd last a whole week.

But now, their dates are gone and replaced with codes like D1 and C7 (and these codes always seem to be changing). Very often, it's midweek, and when I open the bags, they stink repulsively and don’t seem good to eat.

Is there any way to decipher the codes so that way I can go back to only buying the bags that will expire later.

I know I can start freezing them, but I'd rather avoid that if possible.

I believe A is January, B is February, C is March etc and the number is the date eg D20 is April 20th.
  • I found section 2 in this article very informative. Hope it helps. I can't post links but if you cut and paste the address below, you should be able to find it.

I personally wouldn’t leave it in the bags as it will go smelly.

I pop mine in a freezer bag lined with kitchen paper and it lasts a week.
