I am puzzled because it does not match my personal experience.

I do not work for a publicly funded organisation and never have - I work for a private (on the stock markets) manufacturing company.  I am merely stating this based on my own observations that I have had just as bad experiences with various private companies as with government type ones.

In any case in the end your only option to fix it is to vote in a government that knows how to fix all these issues - clearly it isn't this one.

And - given that, as others have pointed out, these services are paid for with taxpayers money, probably be prepared to pay more in taxes to fund any improvements. 

(spoken as someone who has always worked in the private sector, but has a lot of sympathy for the front-line DWP and HMRC staff given the pressure they must be under at the moment).
