Sainsbury’s discount or no discount

Who knew that you don’t get the meal deal or wine discount at all if one of your items from your online order is unavailable on the delivery day? I’ve been buying the £12 meal deal and 25% off 6 x wine for ages but only noticed this week. I ordered 6 bottles of wine and on the delivery day one bottle was not available so they charged me full price on the remaining 5. It’s not highlighted in the email. It’s only if you open the attached receipt that you see the higher prices. Same with the meal deal. One item not available, remaining 3 all at full price. You’d have to give the whole lot back to the driver to avoid paying full price. Ticking yes to substitutes would help but not if you only want specific items eg vegetarian main course or your preferred wines. Asda on the other hand always gives you the discount on the remaining items which was why I assumed Sainsbury’s would too. Live and learn.

Hmmm doesn’t seem fair that.1

Asda don’t do it automatically either, many a time they miss out a starter or part of it and then you get charged full price. It’s no biggy though as a quick call to customer service and they refund.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Competitions Time, Shopping & Freebies boards, Employment, Jobseeking & Training boards If you need any help on these boards, do let me know. Oh dear I thought Asda did automatically honour the discount. I used to see a message on the email on delivery day that said “Don’t worry you’ll still get your discount”. I’ll have to check that in future too. I can’t believe Sainsbury’s don’t mention the discount has been removed, other than they are sneakily getting lots more money off us.0

I've tried them all, and Ocado is the best for this type of thing. Obviously because of the set up, OOS are less likely, but deals are always honoured even in the event of partial OOS. And the best part is that subs mirror the deal. Sainsbury was the worst if I recall, as the substitution is levied at the full price.
Since Ocado have recently become very expensive, I've started using Asda as well. Asda did do the same thing, and honoured a partially filled offer.
Asda is definitely a step down on own brand fresh food, and no carrier bags is quite annoying! So I will be shopping from both, but I have cancelled the smart pass.2 -
Unfortunately I have an annual delivery pass with Sainsbury’s that runs until November so I feel I ought to continue with them. But actually I’m so livid about them doing this in the background and charging me full price without highlighting it in their email receipt that I might just shop elsewhere anyway. It must have happened dozens of times as my Sainsbury’s online shop rarely has complete meal deals or wine x6. I’m going to take 5 bottles back to the shop tomorrow and get a refund of £40 and then rebuy them plus one extra and have 6 bottles for £36. Then I’m going to drink some until I feel less angry!3

£12 meal deal.
With substitution, after the difference voucher is included - £17.36
Without substitution - £15.25
The only way to not pay over the £12 deal price was to refuse all the items and face the wrath of four hungry children.
Had issues with the last three deliveries so asked for the remaining delivery pass cost to be refunded and the pass canceled.
Aside from that, everything seems more expensive doing a Sainsbury's online shop, to the point of ridiculous if you factor in the Nectar price offers in-store.

Yes I agree. If I ever order a meal deal or 25% wine offer again I’ll just give it all back to the driver if any item is missing. Very disappointing and probably best only to get these in store. But what I find unforgivable is that Sainsbury’s do not advise you within the email on the delivery day that you are going to lose the discount. So there must be lots of people out there who do not realise what has happened unless they notice on the attached receipt that some individual prices are higher than on the original order confirmation. Hopefully at least a few more people here will now be aware. I also raised a complaint with Sainsbury’s and asked them to add this to the email if there are unavailable items and they just said “thank you for your comments”. I bet they make a lot of profit out of unsuspecting customers getting partial meal deals & wine offers.0
