Smart export payments for solar PV to replace deemed export

Thank you. That other thread was an interesting glimpse into 2019. I particularly enjoyed one comment of "in five years time..." which makes it perfect to link to now!Exiled_Tyke said:We've had this discussion before:Change to export payments after smart meter install?Money Saving Experthttps://forums.moneysavingexpert.com › discussion
In addition this sets out the government's desire to move from deemed to metered export as well as why it isn't straightforward for the utility companies to implement. As this is from 2019 I think it supersedes the opening article.4.3kW PV, 3.6kW inverter. Octopus Agile import, gas Tracker. Zoe. Ripple x 3. Cheshire1 -
So they're just forcing you to have a smart meter to measure your FIT exports. It says nothing about leaving FIT itself.JKenH said:I am currently on Octopus Flux import tariff waiting to be switched to metered export. I advised Good Energy as requested by Octopus. Whether or not this is what prompted the email I don’t know but Good Energy would not otherwise have been aware that I had a smart meter. This is the substance of their email.
Hello ——
Good Energy is introducing smart FIT export payments. These work by using smart meter readings to record exactly how much electricity you export to the grid. This means you’ll get paid for the actual amount of electricity you export, rather than an estimate. You will be moved over to smart export in the next 6 months. We'll contact you closer to the time to let you know when we're moving you over but there's nothing you need to do to switch over. If you have any questions, please email smartexport@goodenergy.co.uk.8kW (4kW WNW, 4kW SSE) 6kW inverter. 6.5kWh battery.0 -

https://www.goodenergy.co.uk/smart-export-payments/Will smart export payments affect the rest of my FiT payment?
Your generation payment will continue to be paid in the same way that it is currently. You’ll keep receiving reminders to submit your quarterly FiT meter readings, which you can submit via your online account.
The majority of your FiT payment is your generation payment. This pays you a set rate for every unit of electricity you generate, even if you use it at home.
The only part of your FiT payment that will change is your export payment. This makes up a smaller proportion of the overall amount you receive. Instead of being based on a deemed rate of 50% of what you generate, being on smart export means you’ll get paid for the actual amount of electricity you send to the grid.8kW (4kW WNW, 4kW SSE) 6kW inverter. 6.5kWh battery.1 -
Sorry, I obviously didn’t understand your earlier question. “ So they're just forcing you to have a smart meter to measure your FIT exports. It says nothing about leaving FIT itself.” - l already have a smart meter but if I stayed with Good Energy I have to go onto metered export.ABrass said:

No you did not, but using "smart export" to mean "metered export" is an open invitation to confusion with Smart Export Guarantee. That's Good Energy, not you. With a name like "Good" Energy it's hardly surprising that they are cavalier with their terminology.JKenH said:Your latest comment “ Smart export, not smart export guarantee.” - Did I mention SEG?Reed0 -
They state that there will no longer be estimated readings, but they don't estimate any readings, if you don't submit a reading then you don't get paid.Reed_Richards said:That's Good Energy, not you. Ah yes, that was me. I can report that, although Scottish Power have fixed some of the bugs in other parts of their website, from my perspective (as a FiT customer on deemed export, with a smart meter that may or may not meet various requirements but isn't currently used for measuring export anyway), their entire process is completely unchanged from how it looked in 2019, and no mention of any change has been made... to me at any rate.70sbudgie said:

It's also as recently as within the last twelve months that one of their customer service advisers was repeatedly insisting to me that my smart meter is only capable of reporting energy usage to them on a monthly basis. Of course this seems likely to be nonsense.7.25 kWp PV system (4.1kW WSW & 3.15kW ENE), Solis inverter, myenergi eddi & harvi for energy diversion to immersion heater. myenergi hub for Virtual Power Plant demand-side response trial.1 -
Is it not inevitable that FiT / deemed export would be closed down sooner or later?
I only know one person with FiT and they substantially changed the installation since their solar was first installed:
- doubled the size of the array (following an extension)
- added home battery storage
- EV
I am not sure whether they are "supposed" to tell someone when they make such changes, but it seems obvious that, in this case, the percentage of solar exported now has to be much lower than the percentage of solar originally. As time goes by, the number of people that can use all of the solar will increase and the FiT will then be money for nothing - which seems like a cue for a song.0
