I've gone over the £20 mark now started this the night before last.

Well, I finally found some tracks I liked so I could use my tips! I've gone for [Me] - strange name that!, Cima and Supernal. (oh and Snail Mail - its quirky)
There was one really, really good hip hop number, everything about it was excellent such that even a rocker like me could tell it was very good for its genre and might appeal outside of it, but the lyrics were filthy, violent, vulgar and racist. I was genuinely disappointed! Whats happening to me? Am I beginning to care about music like I did when I was in the band. Spooky:eek:

Can someone help me get to a second star.What should i comment on .I usually mention the intros the tune, lyrics and vocals and say whether they are good or bad.What else can I be saying?

As you clock up the tracks you'll generate "Tips". When you put a track on your watch list you can visit it later and you'll see an option to Tip that artist. Pick the ones you liked best or think will do best and use up your tips before the scout room closes, you use them or you lose them!
If you tip an artist who gets through to the showcase it will boost your star rating and there are some other benefits if you want to back that artist.

I dont think theres any specific formula. Try to be helpful and avoid being seriously rude! You need a combination of accuracy in the awarding of marks and good content in your reviews. Mine are often 7-10 lines long but others are far more concise without it affecting them. I often comment on the intro, how I felt on an emotional level, what I thought was good or bad about the track, what instruments stood out, was the musicianship good, outstanding or average, did the track stand out, would I want to buy it, would it appeal to a wider audience or be for only a limited market, could it be improved at all. And I do comment on production quality and also lyrics. I also mention if it generates bodily activity in me, i.e makes me headbang, laugh or feel irritated. You have to be fair, but not dangerously honest. Working in a college I'm good at finding positive things to say about mediocre offerings!

Hopefully it'll improve when the genres get more specific. Its hard for me to comment usefully on gangsta rap or electro trance, screamo or death metal because I dont appreciate the subtlties of these genres - but were all in the same boat. Quality shines through whatever the genre - Use the Force Young Luke Sywalker, use the force.
