Nitrate and Nitrite free bacon - anyone tried it.

Husband is correct weight for his height and age and doesn't have diabetes, heart disease etc. Nevertheless, GP has told him to cut out salt and cut down on processed food. We hardly eat any but I have found Nitrate and Nitrite free bacon.
Anyone tried it ? 3.25 for 12 rashers of smoked or 6 of back doesn't seem too bad.

They are just preservatives aren’t they so I guess if you buy bacon free of them it will just last less before spoiling.I noticed some of the nitrite nitrate free contained more salt so you could be jumping out the frying pan into the fire as the doc has specifically said salt.
I have made my own bacon but I use Prague powder & salt.
but I’m not a doc and it just my thoughts xI’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Competitions Time, Shopping & Freebies boards, Employment, Jobseeking & Training boards If you need any help on these boards, do let me know. We started buying the “Naked’ bacon about three years ago, that’s all we buy now. Also higher meat content sausages. OH was offered statins a few years ago but between cycling, intermittent fasting and switching to Med style eating he sails through his over 40s (60s!) health checks.Fashion on the Ration

I suppose the question would be how often does he eat bacon? If infrequent, I imagine it doesn't matter if its normal bacon. More to the point would be to watch the consumption of all processed foods.2

Maybe more to point is a report out this morning about amount of salt in bread, maybe time to make your own bread if not already doing so?

I'm not a fan of the "Better Naked" brand. The concept is good but the quality of the meat itself is just OK.
Waitrose does own brand nitrate-free at the same price (and quality, IMO) as their standard range:

For me, the small amount of bacon eaten, I dont bother worrying. Mum got a pack of Naked and it was tasteless , waste of time eating it0

I quite like the Naked bacon. I bought a few packs when it was on offer and popped them in the freezer.1

We buy the Waitrose Dry Cured Streaky Bacon with no added water, 97% pork cf 87% pork in the nitrite free version. Much better bacon that doesn't shrivel when grilled.

I normally buy the dry cured bacon from Waitrose which I like. Today I tried the “made without nitrite” bacon and it shrivelled up under the grill. Not for me thank you.1
