in Cutting tax
I pay tax on my state pension under Simple Self-Assessment. The calculation for tax year 2020-21 was correct and paid in Sept. 2021. A few days ago I received an official HMRC letter with the same calculation stating I owed tax for this previous year and needed to pay it by 30 June 2023. I'm 99% sure this is not a scam as the letter had all the usual criteria and details of my relevant income and allowances. I checked my account on-line which stated I owed nothing. a phone call to HMRC (I had a couple of hours to spare!) revealed they also couldn't see anything due - and wondered why I was phoning. They said they noted the call and no action was required from me. So I'm happy at least for the moment, and if it's just me there's no problem. I wonder if this is part of a larger error though with thousands of people receiving duplicate payment requests. In the usual nature of things, some will no doubt fall for it.

Given that the reason you called was the receipt of the letter from HMRC, and presumably you said that up front, why did they wonder why you were calling them?0

Who did the letter suggest you make the payment to?0

Did the letter give details of how to pay the amount and do these details agree with HMRC payment information?
