Are you Economically Inactive?

No judgement. If there is work that needs to be done it is better for everyone that it is done rather than left undone. Nothing to say that the person doing the work could not be a millionaire BTL landlord as well.squirrelpie said:
That sounds rather like a judgment that you said wasn't implied to me? And was the point of the OP I think.Linton said:The problem is that there are insufficient people able and willing to fill the number of vacancies. Hence the economy is not working as efficiently as it could be and It would be beneficial for the rest of us if the millionaire BTL landlord were to be "economically active".0 -

They can call me whatever they want. I have been called far worse than that in my time.0

Not really - like many I know, I'm technically available for paid employment, but choose not to seek it (I'm not yet at state pension age, retired early and live off savings while keeping very busy with various activities, including volunteering).Albermarle said:Maybe ' Unavailable for paid employment'( for one reason or another ) would be a better description?

Doesnt matter one bit what category the government want to put me in. I stopped work at 49 (now 54) and have a small db pension. My wife actually retires to join me at close of play today (55). We have enough in savings to not need to worry about finances and frankly the government can go do one if they think im going back to work. They could pay me £100k and i wouldnt shift an inch.We will be spending as much as we need to enjoy our comfortable retirement and indirectly pay our taxes that way. One chance at this life and no one gets out alive as they say. I have not one ounce of interest in anyone else' business and good luck to everyone9

Same here. Waved goodbye to the Civil Service at 60 and living off that pension. OH did the same. Claimed our German state pensions at 63, wife now drawing UK state pension and I have a couple of years to wait. I love being referred to a economically inactive, makes be smile every time, especially given the govt drive to get the over 50s/under pension age economically inactive back to work. Not seen anything yet that would tempt me - we are too much fun being active otherwise than economicallyp00hsticks said:

In earlier generations people who weren’t economically active, would have been described as “having independent means” or something like that, so long as they weren’t “on the parish”.Fashion on the Ration

My husband and I are what they call "economically inactive" having retired 8 years prior to state pension age and living off private pensions, savings and investments. I don't really care what they call us to be honest. I just know we always wanted our retirement to be at a time we decided and not at the whim of governments who keep moving goal posts.
It made me laugh when Hunt abolished the LTA to encourage the economically inactive early retirees back to work as I cannot really believe there are people out there who would go back to work just to put money in their pensions. Surely anyone who has over a million in their pension can afford to retire and getting rid of the limit won't entice them to carry on working? Please correct me if I am wrong.
We retired when we were fed up of the pointless constant restructuring modern management seem to keep imposing in the workplace and we were financially in a position to retire which is on quite a bit less than the LTA. Maybe if they want to encourage people like us back to work they should look at flexible working practices to enable part time for professionals and the ineffectiveness of most management in both the public and private sector now. My husband after 40 successful years in medical engineering volunteered to work part time six years ago when he took early retirement but was told they do not offer that. Now they have a chronic shortage of engineers and are expecting the ones left to pick up the slack. The customers aren't happy, the remaining engineers are looking at emigrating or taking early retirement so adding further to the economically inactive numbers.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards.
