Go back to them stating the day they left and a P45 is required by return.

Not sure if it is relevant, but I never got a P45 when I retired ( forgot about it myself as well) but my online tax records are correct.
Maybe there is no direct link between an employer issuing a P45 and informing HMRC of your employment termination?

A P45 is automatically created by payroll systems when you're marked as a leaver on the system, this is also passed to hmrc in the RTI submission.

It's possible the email, post or employer portal version just never got to you.

The fact the op's ex employer is stating a p60 will be issued indicates they are still 'live' on the payroll system
