28 week SSP (sick pay) at work ended. Who do I claim from now?

Options
I am over state pension age and have come to the end of my SSP payments through work. I began claim before drawing state pension.

My job is still available for me to return to when my foot has been operated on and I am fit again. I haven't been told why my operation is held up, I suspect it is part of the health service problems we read about.

In the here and now I am going to collect a new sick note and need to know who to forward it to in order to receive benefits. Can anybody here advise on possible options for me.
Thank you.

Your employer should send details when they confirm that SSP has ended

You claim ESA directly from the government....

    https://www.gov.uk/employment-support-allowance

It is (or was I may be out of date) in two parts. Contribution based which could be claimed by anybody medically entitled regardless of their financial need and also Income based which depended on your financial circumstances.

After a certain number of weeks you will be required to attend a medical assessment.

I have no idea if the fact that you are of pension age affects this or not.

    That link you included shows

    Eligibility

You can apply for ‘new style’ Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) if you’re under State Pension age and you have a disability or health condition that affects how much you can work.

You also need to have both:

    • worked as an employee or have been self-employed
    • paid enough National Insurance contributions, usually in the last 2 to 3 years - National Insurance credits also count

Now that your ssp has ceased, I don't believe you will have any other default entitlement to other taxpayer funded benefits related to not being able to work.

From reading on Gov.uk I don't think you will have entitlement to any 'working age' benefits such as ESA or UC.

It does appear I have to be under state pension age to receive ESA.

All I can hope for now is a positive result for my claim for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) The initial application was rejected and I am currently waiting on my appeal to be decided.
When checking, I have found out that I could still receive PIP allowances due to my original claim being made before I received state pension. Something I wasn't aware of, but now glad to find out.

Once again, thanks to you all.

You could check whether you qualify for Pension Credit https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit and also check out entitledto or turn2us to see whether in your specific situation there is anything else you may be entitled to claim.
