Why do companies hire employees?

Legally they aren't but many one man bands consider themselves to be and try telling a lender you are an employee and they'll insist on treating you in an almost identical way to a self-employed person.

TBF to lenders HMRC & Employment law can disagree as to if the same person is an employee or self-employed
