For information - Following assistance on this site from "Molerat" and others in calculating my NI contributions shortfall, I managed to get through to HMRC via the Future Pensions helpline and get a reference number for payment of past years contributions. Paid by bank transfer last Wednesday and updated on my NI record yesterday!GrubbyGirl_2 said:I paid by bank transfer 6 weeks ago and nothing showing yet.

Would Confirmation of Payee not check and confirm the name on the account - ( HMRC NIC Receipts ) to prevent this?MACKEM99 said:I am in the process of sorting my ni missed years and intend to send payment by chq spec delivery next day to be signed for. I guess I am old school but not happy to send large amount by bank transfer in case a digit is wrong and stories of money going missing scared me as bank transfer cannot be claimed back if done incorrectly?

I really think that you are wasting your money sending it special delivery next day signed for - most post for these government departments goes initially to some anonymous outside mail handling facility. .MACKEM99 said:I am in the process of sorting my ni missed years and intend to send payment by chq spec delivery next day to be signed for.
Posting it at a post office and asking for a (free) proof of posting receipt is the MSE way.1 -
My record was updated today, 7 weeks and 1 day after bank transfer. It seems to be pot luck if your record is updated quickly or not1

I did mine online. When obtaining 18 digit ref number over phone was told it takes 6-8 weeks. Told if not updated by 8 weeks to call them. Hope this helps.

I took your (and others) advice and called them for the 18 digit ref. When I spoke to the lady and said I had changed my mind from sending a cheque because I had been advised that post just piles up and will take much longer she agreed.p00hsticks said:

Whenever I spoke to them they were always very polite and helpful.1
