    The original plan was for 24 races, but China was cancelled (due to Covid rules) in early December. F1 were talking to venues (inc. Turkey and Portugal) to replace the race, but couldn't reach agreement. F1 thus confirmed a 23-race season in mid-January, which now has a 4-week gap between Australia (2nd April) and Azerbaijan (30th April).

    The question clearly asks for "races" so the Bahrain testing event 23-25/02 doesn't count and the answer is 23.
