Taxpayers given more time for voluntary National Insurance contributions

Statement

From April 2013, the Government permitted individuals to retrospectively build their April 2006 to April 2016 National Insurance (NICs) record through voluntary contributions as part of transitional arrangements introduced alongside the new State Pension. The deadline for voluntary contributions was set for 5 April 2023.

HMRC and DWP have experienced a recent surge in customer contact. To ensure customers do not miss out, the Government intends to extend the 5 April deadline to pay voluntary NICs to 31 July this year. This applies to years that would otherwise have been out of time to pay after 5 April, up to and including the 2016/17 tax year. All voluntary NICs payments will be accepted at the existing 2022/23 rates until the 31 July.

Just what I said to DH.

They'll likely always be a significant amount of people who "didn't know" or did and procrastinated, right up until the new deadline, and the scramble will begin again.

Especially after being reminded again by ML 😉
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

How can you possibly think that? :)

  • So the deadline to pay has been extended BUT...
    The payment for 2020 - 2021 is currently £795.60
All other years are about £824.
These costs may rise, according to the web site, on April 18th.
If we can't contact them by then will they also extend the date that they put the cost up? Otherwise it will cost each of us another roughly £30 because they are understaffed.

You could also put £30 into context. The guaranteed inflation linked pension you are buying for £800 , would cost around £6,000/£7,000  in the open market. So you are getting an absolute bargain.

Where are you getting £30 from, that £795.60 year will be £907.40 after the increase :)
