National insurance number

Hi
I am trying to log in to sort out my pension on the gov.uk site.
For  some reason the NI number I have been using for the last 23 years is not recognised on the government gateway log in. Did not work even to go for a car test drive.
Have emailed online support but getting no help or advise who to contact about resolving this issue.
Does anyone have any advise who I can ask. Thank you.

I am confused why you are trying to use your NI number when logging in to the Gov Gateway or is it a case of you using the correct 12 digit log in and password then a message comes up on screen ?

Do you have  a blue and red plastic NI  card showing the number?

You have your old P60s showing the number?

https://www.informationnow.org.uk/article/national-insurance/#:~:text=What happens if my National,to claim your state pension.

What happens if my National Insurance number does not appear in the HM Revenues and Customs system?

This may happen if you have changed your name, if you number hasn’t been used or if you are returning to the UK after living abroad. This may cause problems when you want to claim your state pension.

Who can I contact for help with my National Insurance number?

Contact National Insurance General Enquiries for help with your National Insurance.

Visit www.gov.uk if you’ve lost your National Insurance number.

  • I am trying to log in with my government gateway number which is correct. Then site asks for name date of birth and postcode and NI number.
Response is (the information you gave does not match our records)
I know when I tried to do a test drive a car the car dealer said my Ni number was showing as incorrect as well.
I just need to find who I can contact in Hmrc to sort it out.
The online Hmrc  support that emailed me today
gave me no advice at all

This doesn't make sense to me. I don't understand why a car dealer would
     a) ask for your NI number in the first place, and
     b) be able to say that it was incorrect if given it ?.
  • A) they check with the  dvla before you drive the car of the lot
    b) when he entered my number it came back not correct

I wonder if this would help: https://community.hmrc.gov.uk/customerforums/sa/2e5db2c3-a7ab-ec11-826d-00155d9736d7

You can of course post your own question on the HMRC Customer Forum if not.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
