My salary isn’t out of line with the market, it’s out of line within my organisation. You can be doing my job on £35k or on £90k, depending on who you work for.
Line manager is blaming HR for not offering the higher salary, but as I say is only willing to rectify it if I stay.
I’m the only full time female in my company doing this role, but I’m not saying I’m underpaid because of that.
Don't be afraid of mentioning you are the only full time female and are on a lower salary.  Unconscious sexual discrimination is a thing and they may have inadvertently discriminated against you.
Thanks goater78 - I don't wanna be that person who claims sexual discrimination because she's bitter, but it's been a tough few days finding all this out.

I've known the big boss for a long time (pre this job) so I think I can only have an off the record chat with him. If I don't ask then I'll definitely get nothing, if I ask and say no then it reiterates that I'm right to move on.
If you can pretty much double your salary by moving employer, and you've apparently been treated rather shabbily by this one, why stay? Jobs aren't always about earning the most you can, but settling for a situation where someone can apparently 'not notice' you're being underpaid by £12K a year....do you really believe that?
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

They've said if I stay they'll try to get me the higher salary and get it backdated, but obviously if I leave I get nothing.
I mean, there's not really anything to talk about while the offer is not guaranteed.

I don't know why but I always invent these really "cool-guy remark" style scenes in my head, which while usually disasterous in practice, offer me some form of light entertainment.

    My cool-guy remark for this:

"Yes I will cancel my notice if you will increase my pay and backdate it immediately."
"OK it's done, this has been updated in payroll and should be reflected in your next pay packet"
    *day after pay packet*
"I'd like to hand my notice in"
"What, but what about our deal? We backdated your pay??"
"Sorry but *puts sunglasses on* that's just something I didn't notice"

If it wasn't obvious, definitely don't do this!

If I'm honest, I think this is just business as usual.

There aren't many employers out there who will provide 'out of the blue' payrises to employees. Pay increases are nearly always due to being pushed by the employee. If the employee wasn't headhunted, they'd probably still be happily working there for 12k less than their colleagues.

The tale of 'just found out new starter is on more than me' is as old of time.
