Hi, thank you for coming back to me. no my OH didn’t.
I’m sure it was for tax reasons even then.

As I see it there are three possible scenarios for 2004-10
    a) you were claiming child benefit in your name - but if so, this should now be reflected as credits on your NI record for those years.

    b) your husband was claiming the child benefit in his name - in which case I believe the credits would show up on his record (in addition to the NI he paid via in employment). If this is the case then I think you may be able to get the credits transferred to you
    Home Responsibilities Protection: Eligibility - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) .

    c) Neither you or your husband claimed Child benefit. There's no 'tax reason' why you wouldn't have done so back then, because as others have said the 'means testing' of child benefit didn't come into effect until 2013. However, whatever reason you may have had, if neither of you claimed it thien I'm not aware of any way you can go back and do so now

Neither you or your husband claimed Child benefit.

I wonder has some confusion crept in between Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit (Gordon Brown's brainchild)?

CTC was independent of CB so that parents could receive both /either/neither, depending on circumstances

CTC was a tapering benefit related to income but parents earning relatively high amounts could be eligible.

As far as I recollect there was some sort of per child element originally but from a certain year, the TC was limited to 2 (?) children.

I suppose it is possible that the OP/husband didn't claim CB but claimed CT until earnings too high?

Or perhaps  the husband did claim CB and CTC and the CTC dropped off?
