Shrinking mango chutney

Bought a jar of Geeta premium mango chutney. First thing I noticed was the increase in cost, up by 40%.

But, the big thing I noticed was that both jars, labelled ‘medium’, contained different amounts; the older jar contained 320g and the new jar contained 230g.

Is the fact that they were both labelled as ‘Medium’ a case for Trading Standards, Weights and Measures?

Who should I contact?

Doesn't medium refer to the spice level rather than the size...
Absolutely this - you can just imagine the laughs in the Weights and Measures office

Easy mistake to make if you're thinking size rather than spice in the current economic environment.

You did mention the jar size is smaller and the price higher - were they identical label/contents and from the same supermarket? i.e. not one jar of regular and one jar of premium - or one bought at Tesco superstore and one from the local corner shop?
  • As an aside, I don't like this chutney because it is far too sweet. But I bought an Aldi cheese hybrid with this in it at Christmas and it was delicious!

Medium is spice content as I buy the hot one.

So you have the choice to buy either a large 320g jar of medium spiced chutney or a smaller 230g of medium spiced chutney.

Whilst the OP might have been confused re medium labelling I noticed similar appearance of size reduction in Sharwoods products. Shrinkage is much harder to hide in bottles and jars than when goods come in packets and boxes.

Have you thought about making your own?  I do this when mangoes are on offer.  Don’t  use very ripe ones or the chutney becomes a bit mushy.  There’s loads of recipes online and you can make it to your own taste such as more/less spice and, as I do, less sugar.

I come from a family that has made chutney for generations - I am the break in that chain!

The style of mango chutney made in East Africa is wonderful, they make it on the same way in Guyana. Nothing jammy about it, sharp and delish.

    Home-made mango chutney sounds delicious @Murphybear @Rosa_Damascena !

Trading standards.. I bought some Covent Garden pumpkin soup one Halloween. Pitiful amount of pumpkin so I called them. It was perfectly legal to sell a soup containing less than 10% of the named ingredient on the front.
