Sorting out family member tax - voluntary pension contributions.

I need help to sort a family members tax. I'm trying to work out if they need to contribute extra to the pension to fly under the higher tax rate. As a practical matter, I doubt salary sacrifice is possible as there is unlikely to be sufficient salary to sacrifice (you can't receive less than minimum wage either). Additional employee contributions will require a self assessment tax return to obtain the higher rate tax relief and deal with the situation on income for HICBC.
