I have a couple of questions please can you help?

Hi guys,

I have a couple of questions and I know you guys are the ones to ask as you have a wealth of info between you!!

1 - I have a giant fridge freezer. The bottom of the fridge is 2 drawers and they both say 'cooler crisper' on them and have a slidy button that says Low-High on it. Mainly these have been used to store beer but what actually SHOULD i be keeping in them? And what should the slidy button be on depending on what is in there??

2 - I have an electric steamer that I sue for veg etc. I am going to my MIL for xmas dinner and she doesn't have a microwave but has asked us to bring the christmas pudding cooked because she hasn't time to steam it herself or the room on the hob. We can't do this as we want to go to the pub with some friends for an hour before we go to her house (heh heh). SOOOO I was wondering if we took the christmas pud round with us and our steamer can you do the pudding in that?? What do I do?? Do i just shove it in there for the alloted time?? The one we have takes 45 mins so if we put it on when we sit to eat should be loads of time. DO I have to allow more time for it being in an electric steamer?? Or less?? help!!!!

    Hi the cooler crisper drawers are meant for salad and veg ;)

    We don't have a low/high option on ours but sometimes the lettuce gets icy so if that happens to you, then change the setting (as it goes soggy when it defrosts) :D

    Carrots and parsnips keep longer in those drawers as it's colder than the rest of the fridge (heat rises so lowest place is coldest).

    Sorry can't help with the steamer question... hopefully someone else can soon ;)

  • Not sure on the steamer, but can you not put it on the hob to steam whilst you are eating dinner. The hob will be empty then as all the food will be on the table?!
  • Do you have a microwave? Are you driving? If so then I suggest take the microwave or perhaps buy her a cheap one for Xmas!! Really these days I wouldn't steam a pud if I could avoid it. Argos do microwaves for £22, that is only the price of 4 Xmas puds! or 2 if you buy large luxury ones! Crikey

    Put the Chritmas pudding in a deep roasting pan, fill 1/3 full of water and cover the whole thing with foil. Stick in the oven for a couple of hours on a medium heat. You can leave it to cook in the oven quite safely whilst you are out in the pub.

    Forgot to say that the water should not come above halfway up the pudding. Sorry. Just thinking of my roasting tin.

    Take the steamer, you can't oversteam a christmas pud!! They just get moister..mmm... Give it what the packet says, steam is all one temperature no matter how it's generated. (Unless pressure cooking when it would take roughly one third of the time but would take up valuable hob space.)

    I tend to put mine in the slow cooker these days.

    Just make sure whatever method - it doesn't boil dry.
