Finding my deceased sons pensions

Hi all, I lost my son suddenly in October 2022. He has worked from the age of 15- 29 before going to university as a mature student to be a biomedical scientist. Approx 8 months before he died he moved in with his girlfriend ready for uni ending and secured a job within the nhs and began work. I have been searching for his pensions to see if they would help with the enormous funeral bills that I had, but am getting nowhere. Everyone wants start dates and finish dates and names of every employer which I don't have. I have his first employer (Halifax) and his last (nhs). Is there a dedicated number to help find a deceased person's pensions? I have tried the pension helpline and got nowhere as didn't have the info they needed. I have his national insurance number and obviously date of birth/death. Can anyone help?

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.
The usual link offered is https://www.gov.uk/find-pension-contact-details
You may also want to post at https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories/deaths-funerals-probate as the posters there may have something to offer
Most workplaces offer death-in-service benefits and some research on NHS sites might share more
@Silvertabby - is this anything you have experienced (albeit not NHS)
I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine1 -
I'm wondering if HMRC might be able to help you with the names of any previous employers that you haven't yet found. They are likely to want a copy of his death certificate, but may be prepared to release information they have no this basis. They won't be able to provide precise start and end dates, but should be able to give you dates that are close enough for ex-employers to be able to find him, and his NI Number should confirm that it is the same person as appears in their records.
Have you been able to finance the funeral costs so that you have time to pay them?
I too am sorry for your loss, it is a dreadful thing for a parent to have bury a child. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0 -

Under NHS rules full death benefits are only payable after 2 years service/membership, which sadly doesn't seem to apply here. There MAY have been an element of a death benefit (a one-off tax free lump sum) but this will probably have already been paid to the nominated beneficiary (the girlfriend?) assuming he completed an expression of wishes form when he joined the NHS.1 -

You mentioned that he worked for the Halifax, presumably post 2006?
