Hi all,

A query for you all. I purchased an American fridge freezer 4 weeks ago, its still in the packaging as we are having house renovations and aren't at the installation stage yet. Since it was purchased it has decreased in its price by £700! its not in the sale but simply a price change. Is there anything I can do?

You can ask the retailer if they will take it back, but you can't force them to do so. You would have to pay their return costs, and it's not unsual for their to be a 10-15% 'restocking' fee.

Once you have your refund, you can re-purchase it, but you will have to hope that they still have stock.

Have a think about whther you want to return it, and if you decide you do, give them a call and see what you can negotiate about the cost to return it. I would not tell them that you intend to re-purchase it.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

What is the supplier's returns policy? We can't see it from here...
There is no statutory right to return anything unless it was a distance sale, and that expired after 14 days anyway, so is irrelevant in your case.
If the price had increased by £700, would you be happy to pay them the extra? I think not.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

All depends on their returns policy. If it doesn't allow change of mind returns after this time, you're reliant upon goodwill.

Where did you buy from OP? Was this online?

If it was the cancellation period isn’t necessarily 14 days nor are you necessarily bound to bear the cost of return if the trader’s required information isn’t up to scratch.

You can try calling the retailer and explaining the situation and asking them if they'd consider a return and a refund, stressing the fact that the fridge freezer is still fully packaged and ready to be transported. But it's a long shot. And they could just say that you were happy to pay the higher price four weeks ago so there's nothing they can do.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained - but be prepared to be disappointed. It might be one of those things that you just have to suck up and move on from. They happen to us all from time to time, unfortunately.

If they had raised the price by £700 would you be contacting them to pay the difference?

Two weeks ago I bought a dishwasher from JL - yesterday I saw that the price had dropped by £90.00.  JL have a procedure for claiming back the difference so I have submitted the form online.

In line with this [price drop]  please know that a price drop refund request can be processed if you have already bought the item from us and the price has since been reduced at John Lewis (either online or in-store) and as long as the item is purchased within 35 days. Since we have a dedicated department that can arrange this for you, I would humbly request of you to please submit a price drop refund request by clicking this link. After submitting the request, rest assured that one of our relevant team will get in touch with you within 24 hours.

So, it can be worth doing.

I ordered an expensive shed, a couple of days later the price dropped.  I phoned and asked to cancel the order so I could re-order at the cheaper price.  It was pretty quickly agreed that they'd drop the price.  It was pretty cheeky of me as I'd already managed to get a discount but it wasn't a cheap shed.

I'd also check reviews just in case there's a reason for the drop in price.

Its not a ridiculous thing to do (even though I hadn't received the goods at that point).  Its an MSE thing to do.

However I would check the item is in stock at that new price, or available elsewhere at that price before starting a return.  Its worth doing to save £700 obviously (if you have to) but bargain priced items can go out of stock quickly.
