My autistic brother was cold called into giving his details to a similar company called Reclaim Now. They then claimed his tax rebate from previous years. I am at a loss is to how HMRC allowed this to happen without proper checks and how Reclaim Now were able to establish that he had tax due to him.

They don’t know there was a refund due. They work on the probability of there being one. Sometimes they make false claims to produce a refund and pocket a large percentage of it. HMRC carry out checks later and , if found not to be correct, they reclaim the full amount from the taxpayer, not the claims company.sergio9320 said:My autistic brother was cold called into giving his details to a similar company called Reclaim Now. I've just received a rebate from HMRC and they have sent the cheque to a company called Hawkshaw. I don't know who they are and why my cheque has been sent to them instead of me. Can anyone help.0

HMRC can. They will be able to send you a copy of the documentation you "signed" to allow the refund to go to Hawkshaw.jayce said:I've just received a rebate from HMRC and they have sent the cheque to a company called Hawkshaw. Whether you think it's genuine is another matter.
