Can’t beat The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford. An oldie but a goodie.

Or if they like adventure, the Call of the Wild by Jack London.  Again an older one so it depends if they fancy more modern writing.

A more recent one is Dogs of the Deadlands although that’s a slightly younger reading age,

I would suggest wandering into Waterstone’s and having a word with their extremely knowledgeable staff. Because it might depend on how much of a reader they are is as to what is going to suit them best.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

Second vote here for "The Incredible Journey" by Burnford.  I don't know how many times I've read that as a child and adult.  And seen the movies too.  It's good because there are 2 dogs that are very different and you as a reader have expectations as to which is going to do well, add to that a spoiled cat.  Really a good read.

Another I enjoyed, though more brutal, is "Old Yeller" by Gipson.  The real bond between a boy (young man almost) and his loyal dog and how the dog is his companion and saves his life and the tragic consequences.

For something more fun, assuming you can find it, is Farley Mowat's "The Dog who wouldn't Be".  He also wrote "Never Cry Wolf" which is more serious and, obviously, about wolves rather than dogs.  Nothing to do really with animals but I did enjoy "Lost in the Barrens" too.

Canadian stuff (except for Old Yeller which is from south of the 49th) but given my upbringing I'll make no apologies for that!!!
