In times of shortage those that pay most (or have the biggest overall commercial power) will be supplied.

In some cases this will be branded product where the manufacturer captures more of the margin and maintains their brand equity/availability, in others it will come down to a retailer vs retailer decision

Might be like grape nuts last year - there was a major production failure and a world wide shortage.  A box that might sell in Waitrose for £3 were apparently on fleabay for £20.

And while grape nuts are a brand name product I can't imagine that there are all that many malted wheat producers so maybe it's a simple production twitch that has delayed delivery.

I was in Asda on Saturday, no fresh tomatoes of any kind. I see more empty shelves in recent times, is it more common?

Exactly the same as original poster: none for weeks in Lidl, managed to find one in Aldi. Randomly, we picked up one really cheap short-dated branded box in a Tesco.

I think the real truth is Lidl won’t pay the inflated prices so they’re just playing a waiting game till the price drops again.

(Have been led to make do and look for alternatives and so have rediscovered the joys of home-made muesli from cheap porridge oats).

    would've . . . could've . . . should've . . .

  • Our local Asda and Morrisons haven't had their own brand Shreddies for weeks now.

Both standard & chocolate varieties in stock in my local Aldi today, but less stock than other cereals. Quite a few empty spaces in the fruit & vegetable aisle though.
