National Insurance and Changing Name

Options
Ok so when I was a kid my mother re-married and I inherited the name of my step father.
I've used this name until now. I start a new job soon :j and I want to revert back to my birth name. My name change was never done through deed-poll or anything, I just ended up using that name through school .etc and me NI number and card are in that name.
So does anyone know how I can go about changing my N.I (and tax?) back to my birth name?
I looked on the HMRC website but that place is a jungle, soooo many numbers and none of them specfic to my need. Any help is much appreciated.

I hope this is in the right place.

  • Hello,
Hope this will help a little! My mum re-married when I was 10, and I used her new name too. I didnt have it changed officially either (Dad would have gone nuts!) but somehow my NI card showed up just before my 16th birthday, with this new surname on! I couldn't understand how - as I didnt use the name on anything official.
Anyway, I just ignored it, and actually stopped using the surname about 6 months later as my mum divorced!! I have been working and/or using tax credits etc for the last 7 years, so I have never had a problem. I dont think its something you need to do anything about! I used my NI number loads, and in all this time, its never been an issue. Infact, til I saw your post, I had forgotton all about it!
I wouldnt worry. Just use your official name. They got your name wrong, not you. It was sent to you automatically, it wasn't something you applied for!
  • Hello! What good timing. I phoned the tax office to query a tax code last week only to find they didn't have any new details since I got married last year. They changed everything, inc my name, over the phone. Easy. Have fun. :D
  • Hi BlueyHSI,

Your name has legally changed through was is known as a change of name by usage. Therefore, you will need to change it back again by executing either a Statutory Declaration or Deed Poll.

As far as i understand, it is far easier to change your name by Deed Poll because all you have to do is sign the document in the presents of a witness whereas with a Stat Dec you have to go to the local Magistrates Court to have it notarised by a Clerk.

When i changed by name by Deed Poll i used The Deed Poll Service and it cost me £25 but there are cheaper companies around... just do a Google search.
