When In was younger (20s-30s)
I was not great with money, to the point in 2004 i decided to sort my self out, I didn't go bankrupt, but entered into an IVA which discharged in 2009,
since then I have been a model citizen, been good with my finances and currently have no real debt other than my mortgage on my house i have owned since 2015,
over the last few years I have received letters from a company called Capquest, working on behalf of abbey national saying i owe £1400, , as I am pretty sure I never had any loans etc from abbey national previously and certainly none that were included in my IVA, I just ignored it, as i presume they blanket send these letters out to all the people with similar names/details etc, and wait for a bite!
however a few weeks ago i received another letter from them saying they were handing the debt over to a company called Resolvecall, who have sent me a letter today, saying if they hear nothing in 7 days, are going to pay me a visit
I have printed off the provit letter from MSE that I found
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2607247/letter-when-you-know-nothing-about-about-the-debt-aka-prove-it-letter
and going to probably send it tomorrow,
my worry is in doing this, I am initiating contact with them, and they are not going to leave me alone,
If for one minute I thought I had this debt previously, I would try to resolve it,
but I really don't, and worried I might end up being involved in someone else's debt
just after some advice on what i should do next,

If since 2009 you have been debt free, then in any event in almost every circumstance anything from prior to that would be well and truly statute barred by now in any case.
This sounds to me like a fishing trip - or possibly simply someone chancing their arm and recovering something against a very, very old matter, buy hoping the person they send the contact to simply pays without quibbling because they know no better.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡
Balance as at 01/09/23 = £115,000.00 Balance as at 31/12/23 = £112,000.00
Balance as at 31/08/24 = £105,400.00 Balance as at 31/12/24 = £102,500.00

As they have put this in writing, the correct response is a written prove-it.
Now if they want to pursue this they should respond with a copy of the original agreement and a statement showing payments.
If their own evidence shows that there has been a 6-year period with no acknowledgement and no court claim started, then there is a hybrid letter saying 'I still don't recognise this as my debt but on the basis of the information you have given me it would be statute barred anyway'.
Start with the prove-it. I'd send it to Crapquest, er Capquest4 -
Agree with the big man on this, its not unheard of for insolvency debts to be sold on, as occasionally the arrangement will fail, and the debt becomes collectable again.
What is unusual is for a company like Crapquest to sit on it for so long without chasing it, probably bought it years ago, and forgot about it, then one day they were cleaning out the files and found the little gem hidden under a mouldy jam sandwich, or something like that, and thought they would try their luck.
See what response you get, whatever it may be, it can`t hurt your credit file as even if it was your debt, its long since dropped off it.

@fatbelly
so its capquest I send the provit letter to not Ressolvecall ?0 -
If Capquest have written recently, I'd send it to them. They appear to be the new owners0

then i received a letter yesterday from Ressolvecall dated 10/02/23, stating they are acting on behalf of Capquest to assist in collecting the outstanding balance,
if they do not hear from me in 7 days, capquest will instruct Ressolvecall without notice to arrange a visit to my property
Just want to make sure i send it to the right company, from what you just said, and i put above it would seem Capquest need to recieve the letter, but just want to make sure ?

Resolvecall have as much legal power as your postie.
If they do turn up, just tell them to trot off and never to return.
And send the letter to Crapquest. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing1 -
