Getting paid for a sub-contractor

Hello... Can anyone help me, please?
I was sub-contracting until yesterday. So, a few weeks ago I had an accident first one in my 18 years of driving in an 18-ton wagon, and not at fault, however, the company said I owe them money or I have to wait until the accident has been investigated. Unless I was doing something unlawful which I wasn't.
I wasn't told about any such thing nor communicated to say I was being paid. I have bills to pay etc- does anyone know where I stand legally? it is a very scandalous and cowardly act
Many thanks!!!

How much money are the company saying you need to pay them?
Does your contract have any reference to a payment in the event of an accident?
Sometimes, contracts have a nominal / excess amount written in that is passed on to the driver.0 -

Many thanks!!!Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0 -
Thanks, I am sorry I wasn't sure where the post should go... They did owe £950 for my week's work- they paid 80% of it last night after I sent this post, as I emailed the manager and copied in the directors. I had no contract per se and definitely not for excess to damage to their vehicles, my accident wasn't my fault nor was I doing anything unlawful. Thanks!0
