VAT reclaiming

Hello,

I hope someone can help.

I have had an extension built at my property, and intended to claim at least some of the costs back via my business re VAT as I intend to use one of the rooms as my office.

The payment applications submitted by the builder all had an overall costs and included within this 5% VAT, which I believe is incorrect.

I chased him for invoices and receipts which he was very reluctant to provide but subsequently provided incorrectly formatted invoices with the same overall total but now showing a charge of 20% VAT.

He has a reputation for being dodgy and somehow this doesn't feel right and I was wondering if anyone could help

It feels like he is somehow trying to avoid VAT, and or over charging me but I don't understand this well enough.
