I pay my VED by direct debit and the DD is taken on the first of the month.

I get an email a few weeks before that date.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

Never a DD for us, never
Just by the 12-month tax, simple as that and make a note of the expiry date. Though a reminder is sent through, the onus is me the car owner to ensure its up to speed, Simple to understand road tax, always runs out on the last day of the month and new starts from the 1st.
I recall paying around 500 a year years ago for Mrs DiY's Jeep  - that car was the real deal.
    Thanks

I thought the onus was on the person named on the V5 to do that.

    Update.
Last year’s direct debit did indeed go out on 16 Feb which I hadn’t noticed last year. Called DVLA again, to check they had the correct bank details and it’s moved again to 20th February.

If they’re happy with that then it’s fine by me.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I was looking again at this.
It seems the initail DD is around 10 days after you originally tax it. (all at once or first payment if monthly by DD)
Then if paying monthly, the following DD's are on the 1st of each month.

It seems either way, the same date applies next years tax. The initial DD date still stands.

I don't use DD for much, just use a one off payment each year.
