Was there any tax/NI involved in these payments.  If so have they provided details of the recalculation for each payment so that you can be sure you are repaying only the net pay you received not the gross payment they made.

It’s annoying but even though they assured you it was right you recognised it was clearly an overpayment. You should have continued to query it and save the excess as they were always going to ask for it back eventually.
Agreed, this would have been the best course. After all, you knew the money to have been paid in error and was likely to have to be repaid at some point. Wouldn’t have been wise to have spent it

My maths may be wrong but sounds like you should have got paid £380 a month and instead were getting £630 a month. I think if I was you I would have pushed this more with HR as it’s seems such an obvious overpayment it was going to come back and bite you later on.

I would ask whether you can have a 12 - 18 month payment plan.
  • Thanks for all comments. I did push with hr and queried it several times. But it shouldn’t have been up to me once I’d told them once. The burden should be on payroll to be doing things correctly. Unfortunately they have a habit of getting things wrong.
I didn’t have the luxury of setting the money aside as my universal credit payments were less because my wages were higher
Anyway, they’ve agreed to repayment over 12 months now.

That maybe your opinion but legally the responsibility is equally shared.

Glad they have agreed better terms, can you claim back UC that you were denied due to higher wages or will you be able to claim a higher amount now? Not sure how it works but worth looking into.
Also check the Tax NI situation as you will have overpaid on those.
Check whether the 1500 is gross or net.

  • Presumably your pay slips would have showed salary/hourly rate or something that was illuminating even to some thicko at Payroll.
Sure you wouldn't have let it rest if they were underpaying you.
  • They were underpaying my colleague at the same time as overpaying me. She didn’t let it rest and it still also took 6 months to get it rectified
