And is there a definitive test or statement you can ask someone to prove their official status as an IFA?Yes. You ask them if they are an IFA. It should be a simple yes or no answer.
An IFA will draw attention to the fact they are an IFA. It will say it on their website. It will say it in their terms of business and it's a regulatory requirement to disclose your status as an adviser as early as possible in a meeting. So, ask for a copy of their terms of business.
An FA cannot refer to themselves as an independent. So, if you get one that !!!!!! foots around the answer then assume they are not as an IFA would give a firm yes.
