Requesting references from builder

Hello

We are looking to have some building work done (rendering, new kitchen fitted, wall knocked through, patio relaid...).

Had the first builder around today to quote was going ok showing him around until at the end I asked if he had any references.

He was quite shocked by this as he perceived it as a "small" job which I can understand, but it is still likely to be a pretty significant amount of money for me. After his shock he did say I could come see some current work but he definitely seemed taken aback.

This is the first proper work I've ever had done and from what I had read it was something important to ask but was I over demanding asking for this on a job of this size?

Thanks for any input

No one ever asks, is why he is probably shocked!   I work on much larger projects and barely anyone asks.  I can think of one couple 6.5 years ago who went to see one of my projects and asked for proof of insurance, which is fair enough.  That said, I think we generally come from recommendations.

    Good for you!

We asked and our builder was happy to give us contacts for two large projects which we went and saw. Not sure he'll be using us as a reference though....... His building team were fine but the plumber was a nightmare. We also asked to see insurance.
