M & Co - Gift Cards

On The M & Co administration advice page (https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2022/12/m-and-co-administration/) there's an entry ....

"Gift cards are still being honoured in-store - but you'll need to spend twice the value to use them"

My pensioner friend has £70 in cash-bought vouchers from Xmas - she tried unsuccessfully to spend them online - & to add another £70 to spend these vouchers would be a huge expense to her.

I've never heard of such a deal - How is this legal ?

As a creditor of a company in administration you need to wait until the end of the administration to see if you can get any pennies in the pound from what you are owed.  In this case the administrators will pay you that debt in goods in full as long as you spend the additional amount.  Perfectly legal, spend extra or risk losing it all.  One reason for never buying a shop gift card.
