Boxes marked (optional) on self assessment

Probably a weird question but when a field is marked "(optional)" on the self assessment does this literally mean you don't have to enter an answer? It seems some yes/no and check-a-box fields are "(optional)", even though you have to say yes or no?!! But then others that you have to type in - do you have to complete them? For example if you rent property, how many properties you rent out?

  • If you are required to complete any boxes, and don’t,  you will not be able to progress to the next page.
  • I an exact same question.
Can we skip all "optional" questions and if so, what is the point in filing a self assessment with no info?

So what did you do in the end? I skipped all questions but still hesitating on submitting the document like this.

What do you mean by filing a self-assessment 'with no info'?  There are a number of optional questions but plenty of mandatory ones (once you've identified which sections apply to you), so you should be able (and indeed forced) to convey all the required info by completing mandatory questions rather than optional ones, that's obviously how they decide which ones are optional!

Perhaps it would be worth specifying some examples of optional questions you're planning not to answer that you feel ought not to be optional in order to represent your income, etc?
