Sidewards move, can I negotiate a salary increase?

Hi, I've been in my current role for 6+ years, got 11yrs experience in my field. I wish to apply to a new job, which would mean a sidewards step for me.

Do I have scope to negotiate my salary?

We are due an update on the normal salary review/inflation increase in 2 weeks time. This job closes 13/01 and interviews end of this month.

There is always scope to negotiate.

I'd be asking for a 5% increase on what you will be awarded this payround.  And would be happy if that awarded after 2 months when you've proved your worth it.  Also be sure to ask how any company bonuses will be effected by a move.  Monthly bonuses are much easier to manage as they will be based on your current work in whatever role.  But if bonuses are less frequent you might find you lose a big chunk if your work in the new role is only looked at for half the year or something.

Thank you, I was not clear, this is an internal vacancy. But understand about the +5% and makes sense on the bonuses. Better not to assume!

There's always scope to try, but depends on two things: how valuable you would be to the company in your new role and how good a negotiator you are. Nothing lost by applying and if offered the role trying to negotiate.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
  • Check your employer's pay policies, you haven't said what sector you work in but if you are in a sector where there is a clearly defined pay structure, such as there is in the public sector and many charities then there is often much less scope for negotiation on pay as they are often set by more clearly defined parameters. Where there is a more free-standing pay structure (maybe banding without set pay points) and in many private sector organisations there is greater scope for negotiation.

I work in the private sector. We are in diff grades, but they say there's no banding as such. Not sure if i can ask to see about banding as I'm guessing this is confidential.
