By the 80s, for me, it became 2 times 1, 1 times the other but not sex dependent, higher income dependent.   Luckily I never had to get my dad to cosign for me lol.  But I did see forms in women's personnel files, dated the 60s where they had to sign, on the occasion of their marriage, saying they would continue to give good and effective service.  Presumably they didn't want girls worrying about their husbands tea when they should have been giving their attention to work lol.  (So that would be the women's files some 20 years later as I was in personnel the mid 80s clearing out stuff)

@PennysIntoPounds - I can now account for £75 of the surplus money. It was my share of a royalties payment from my Dad's music. I have earmarked it for paying for the free-range turkey we ordered (it should more than cover that) & had forgotten that I hadn't moved the money out of our current account. The remaining £22 is still a mystery. We did have £25 from ERNIE so I went back & checked, but I defo sent it to the House & Garden Pot, so it isn't that. Big Budget Day not until 27th so it may well come to light then, if not before.

Interesting to read your comments about mortgage inequality. Shocking how long it lasted, as there were plenty of women around earning good professional salaries. The worst property sexism I've encountered (I bought my first house in 1994) was from a double glazing salesman who wanted to check if I had a husband so he could make an appointment when he was in!!! Outrageous!! I was single, professional salary, the sole property owner and therefore paying the bill in its entirety. Told him this in no uncertain terms & he wasn't even embarrassed. He actually rubbed his hands & said 'Great, only one person to please'. I replied rather acerbically, "I am very difficult to please'. What an absolute cheek! Mid- 1990s & he wasn't much older than me!

I remember one of my first experiences back in the day when I was doing summer training at a civil engineering firm.  Having walked down my street in a skirt and been cat-called in the morning, I returned in my overalls that afternoon to do an inspection of their work.  It was my first experience pulling up an employee for their bad behaviour and a lesson in sexism I never forgot.  It didn't stop them calling me all forms of endearments and presuming I knew naught, but my very traditional gender-normative Gran enforced grace, especially under pressure and they addressed me as MsRT for the rest of the summer. 😉  Men in the building trades can forget their manners and harbour some horrible stereotypical chauvanistic behaviour but I don't think at heart they are evil or nasty, just unenlightened.

I've never had a problem being "loved" by workmen it is mostly just what it is.  But I do get really riled by the likes of double glazing salesmen asking my son to join us (no OH).  They really should know better.

I made an appointment for one of those firms to give a quote on a front door.  I was determined to not waste all afternoon as he sat on my living room couch and told me how much better his were than the competition or showed me tiny samples of windows- I've seen double glazing before, I've seen the front doors mate lol. 

Anyway I was weeding in front garden, he arrived all shiny shoes and big smile, gallops down the path let's go in he says. 

No we can't says I.  Husband works nights and is sleeping (lie).  Theres the door, get some measurements.   

Hmm.  Salesman very nonplussed. 

We can't go in he says? 

Nope I confirm,  let's just do it now, there's the door.   

I'll have to phone my boss, says he.

Now I'm confused.   He gets on phone and I hear him saying she won't let me in.  No, she won't let me in the house.  Comes off phone and tells me to rearrange when he can get access.

I thank him for coming but tell him he's not getting access, if he wants the job measure up and give me a quote.

We part company.

Oh lordy, we've had a spendy morning in Lincoln today, but it was mostly Christmas shopping (so covered from the Presents Pot) plus a good stock up of my toiletries stash (Personal Spends). Oh, & a good 1970s compilation CD (also Personal Spends) for kitchen karaoke & veg chopping based boogie-ing. Looking forward to unpacking it tomorrow & also getting lots of jobs done because I decided that the rest of today would be about the perfect interface between my backside & the sofa.
