I won a competition but food product was out of date?

Hi all. Not sure if I’m posting in the right place but wanted to ask - I was really chuffed to win a competition recently and receive a Christmas cake by a local bakery. However the eat by date stated 2021. When I enquired about this I was told there was a computer error and all goods are made to order the day before. I thought I would check in the store for the same product I won and all these had 2023 on. When I asked the server in the shop about it he seemed a bit miffed. Not sure what to do? Wondering what others would do in my situation? I had to throw away the cake.

I would either believe it was a labelling error and enjoy the cake or disbelieve it and still eat the cake as Christmas cake lasts for years.Pmd the team when back online to move from expired groceries posts to a more appropriate board.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Competitions Time, Shopping & Freebies boards, Employment, Jobseeking & Training boards If you need any help on these boards, do let me know. I assume you didn't just blindly throw it away? Did you cut into it? Was there any mould? Was the cake dry and inedible?
If it genuinely was two years old it would be in poor condition and genuinely dry and unappetising, then just return it.
In fact why did you throw it away and then go into the shop? You could have taken it into the shop with you!
Never throw away cake and similar because of the date, check the quality of the product first and decide if it is worth eating.
Things wiht a use by like fresh meat are different, but best before dates on cake, biscuits, crisps etc can usually be ignored.3 -
I would have thought a chocolate log over a year old would look pretty ropey with a bit of a white bloom on the chocolate. I would have at least tried it. I doubt a bakery would have one that was hanging around for a year TBH, they'd have binned it themselves by now. A shame either way.
Actually had an Xmas pud that was a year past it's BB date this year and it was fine, still most and perfectly edible.4
