Self assessment charge too high

Hello, I'm looking for help on why my self assessment bill is so high. I can't get through to HMRC on the phone. I completed a self assessment only because I have received Child Benefit for 2021-22 and need to pay it all back because my salary is above the threshold. I am PAYE and have no other income. I stopped Child Benefit payments in April 2022 so have received no payments since then and my tax account is showing that I owe nothing. I thought that I would have to pay back only the Child Benefit for 2021-22 (approx £1700) but it says the following:

Total amount due for 2021-22 - £3437.60
Plus
First payment on account for 2022-23 - £1718.80
Total to be added to Self Assessment account due by 31 January 2023 - £5156.40!

How is this possible?

Thanks for any help.

Your full calculation should explain why. It could be you've paid less tax during the year, had some benefits not taxed on your payslips, or your salary is over £100k and you've hit the taper...

There's a bunch of things that it could be - but your SA302 calculation should explain exactly why
  • Not enough information to hazard a guess. Did you copy the pay and tax details from the P60? What is the tax code on the P60? Any expenses claimed and not entered?
