On mortgage - not on deeds

The time to deal with this was 5 years ago. If he did contribute for 10 years then this bolsters a claim. He needs to seek legal advice.Far1974 said:

Correct me if I’m wrong.
It seems there are 2 properties- the main house and the cottage - the cottage was built with a mortgage obtained in joint names on the main house. The main house is rented out and the rental income used to pay the mortgage.
The ex was living in the cottage that they built together and funded from the joint mortgage.
5 years ago the ex left and now there is a question of whether he has a claim on the cottage, on the grounds that he has a mortgage (albeit secured on the main house) that was used to fund its build.

I presume it's all one property (no matter how many things are built on it) with one mortgage though. So any claim would be on the overall property.0

The mortgage is joint but the deeds for the property is in ex’s name.The property is currently rented out. They lived in the property together for 2 years then lived in the main house together (ex’s property) and rented out the cottage.He paid towards bills etc for 15 years
