Just harvested my first crop....

I'm very jealous as my garden got off to a late start this year and the slugs got off to an early one  Still the rocket is doing well (slugs don't like that it seems!) Troo do you know if I can treat rocket in the same way as lettuce? Or do I have to plant more? Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

I have been harvesting from my lettuces since the weekend.
I have a loads so only pick a leaf or two fom each plant.
Planted some more straight in to the ground.
Has saved me buying a lettuce at the weekend. And it was very yummy for my tea.
Just have to make sure I inspect and wash it well because of the lovely little bugs.
Next year I hope to get everything off to an earlier start and may try and get a greenhouse as well.

Caz - my leaves are about 4 - 5 inches long - like so called "baby spinach" from the supermarket. I also cut them rather than pulling them out, I always remember that is what my old dad used to do and they DO grow back.
I have also got lettuce on the go, I shall have some of thet tonight with my salad - I'm licking my chops in anticipation!!!!

This the first year of being able to grow veggies as we have moved and there are proper defined areas for growing veggies.
It is so nice to be able to harvest something that you have grown yourself. I find it does not take that much time. A few mins for morning inspection and then another few mins in the evening just to water and check everything.
Even planting the seeds only takes a minutes.
I am now waiting for my apples to grow a bit bigger and the cherries on the tree we have inherted with our move here to ripen. Yummy.

Catznine,
You can pick rocket one leaf at a time, but if it gets too much sun (hah!) it will bolt. Then the leaves are small and hot, but you can eat the flowers. So it's a good idea to plant a little row every 3 weeks or so, then you can eat rocket till you're sick of it.
BTW, it makes a nice pesto, if you blitz it with walnuts, garlic and olive oil.0 -

That is what happened to mine and my mothers. They did flower and then I pulled them up as they where not coming to anything.
Never mind think I will have to try and grow in a shady spot.

I used some of the rocket today with some baby spinach leaves, lettuce leaves and radishes all home grown, feel very proud although everything is still very tiny at moment so won't go too mad. Spring onions and carrots are coming through and there are plenty of flowers on the tomato plants so fingers crossed. Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

Just out of interest I picked one lettuce leaf from our garden last night (we've got a shop bought one in the fridge still) and gave it to OH who is not really a lettuce fan except in sandwiches. I couldn't help but grin when he said "Wow, it's got taste! Definitely worth not having had a windowsil for months" :j:j:j:j
I just hope the tomatoes, radish, spring onions, parsnips, carrots and beetroots are the just as tastey
