Black beans

I'm going to cook some from scratch.  I'm intending to use the slow cooker - do I need to boil them first?

I think if you put on low, longer time, it should work without boiling first.

I believe the only beans that need a vigorous 10 minute boil are kidney beans. To remove the toxins.
I'm sure black beans can just go in the slow cooker.

apparently, the  kidney bean job is correct. I have done some research,as I am moving towards a more vegetarian diet - and I like beans! Even dried beans will cook from scratch, but soaking them cuts down cooking!

At this time ,not a bad idea is it?

Tinned are a lot less hassle but have become significantly more expensive in recent years.

So I take it that it’s only kidney beans that need boiling - all the other legumes are ok just to soak and put in the slow cooker?

Though come to think of it, I should have worked out cooking costs before being seduced into buying dried instead of canned.
  • Aye its Kidney beans that HAVE to be boiled for 10 mins

Mind I cook all beans in the pressure cook function of my instant pot - 20 mins from start to finish. love it

I make a Cuban Black Bean Stew every couple of months in my slow cooker.  Soak the beans overnight and cook on High for at least 10 hours.  (I find that the beans don’t soften on Low.)
