Newly bankrupt, what next?

I was made bankrupt on the 7th and had a phone call from the IPA team who have confirmed I’m only on an NT IPA until April and nothin further to pay unless my circumstances change,

I’ve not yet had my OR interview.

I have explained in a call arranging the date and time that I have dyslexia and dyspraxia as well as poor  memory I also still don’t really understand things like APR etc  and I can’t read over long documents as it confuses me and I know I’ve read and also pretended to read over documents and signed not knowing what I was getting myself into.

I know I have a lot of debt but can’t even remember most when I took loans out or even what for etc.

What I do know is I have mental health issues and have done for many years and some of it is I used to spend to make me feel better and ex partners took advantage with my vulnerabilities and I used to get often, if you loved me you would get my this of pay for that and stupidly I did.

im with a new partner now who has made me see my ex’s never really god love me and were taking advantage of me to see how much they could get out of me and both have now disappeared and I’ve no idea where they are,

How on earth do I explain all this to the OR in a couple of days as I think she will see me at fault for all this especially as I’m financially uneducated, they never really did any lessons around finances etc back in the day when I was at school and my dyslexia can make it hard to understand stuff.

I do still have very bad anxiety and depression but medicated. I have mentioned this to her in an email and it’s been agreed my partner can speak on my behalf due to how I can get when speaking about personal stuff especially with my ex’s

Since lockdown I rarely go out and if I do k won’t go out unless someone I know is with me and im trying to work on my social anxiety by joining a small hairdressing course in a doll training centre that has only 6 of us on it when I’m there and my partner takes me on the bus and meets me when I’m finished so that I don’t have to get on a bus full of strangers on my own.

Sorry about any spelling or grammar errors etc, I only have my specialist software that sorts all that out on work devices and not on personal ones.

Hi. All you do is answer any questions as honestly and as briefly as you can.

Most of the things you are worried about won't come up.

It doesn't matter that you can't remember all your debts because they are covered by your bankruptcy anyway. So if, in the future, someone writes to you to say you owe money, and the debt pre-dates December 2022, then you just give them your bankruptcy number.

When you say 'I was made bankrupt' did you petition for it yourself or did one of your creditors? The latter would be quite unusual unless it was HMRC.

Let us know how the interview goes.

Sorry that’s another thing sometimes I don’t mend things clear enough, i petitioned my own bankruptcy as things were getting too much with being scared to answer the door and I nearly had a notice to seek possession of my home and I had bills constantly ringing or texting. I rent from the council but luckily the bankruptcy has now cancelled that.

Aldi another thing even though my mobile phone contract is up to date o believe I will lose that with o2 shortly. It wasn’t included in my list of creditors as wasn’t behind on it but it’s on my credit file. Although im now unable to get credit over £500 not that any company would he willing now, could I get a new phone through my mum and just pay that each month as she offered to take one out in her name for me ? I’ve just ordered a 30 day rolling sim only for me though just incase o2 cancel my contract and bar my phone, it’s not happened yet but still early days.

    Yes, I understand.

You may be ok with your phone but you have a back-up plan if not.

I can borrow a phone for a few weeks and use the sim I have bought. The phone my mom has offered to get for me has a 6 week delay and I’d the same price as my current plan the person who looked at my I & E didn’t mention anything about my phone costs but maybe that was due to me saying I work from home permanently and I use that to keep in contact with the office and my team. Sky and broadband costs weren’t even questioned either so I’m guessing they are all acceptable to them.

The OR will have no interest in the morbid details, just the basics of how you arrived at the point you are at now.

As fatbelly explained, they ask the questions, you just answer as honestly and as briefly as you can, if they require further context, they will ask you for it.

Don`t offer information they do not ask for, PAYG sims are as good as contract, value wise, if not better.

    Good luck.

Hi, because you have already received a lot of good information about how to manage your bankruptcy, etc., from very knowledgeable people on this site, I would like to offer some help, if I may, with the fact that you said - "I have explained in a call arranging the date and time that I have dyslexia and dyspraxia as well as poor memory. I also still don’t really understand things like APR etc and I can’t read over long documents as it confuses me and I know I’ve read and also pretended to read over documents and signed not knowing what I was getting myself into.

I am wondering if you have ever heard of the Advocacy Service?  You can contact your local council and they will be able to help you to access that service.

There's more helpful information in the following link -

PS  For what it's worth, I think your post made perfect sense.

    All the best to you.

Thank you, it has been agreed my partner can speak on my behalf tomorrow which is a good thing as I would probably end up telling them more than is  necessary.

This group has been a great help
so far as even though CAB helped me with the application and I & E I don’t remember them saying anything about an IPA but at least I’m aware through this group and they have already assessed that and the only IPA is to collect my tax from employment. I’m hoping it will end up too late to set up as I’ve already had my payslip ready for payday on the 22nd and I’m paying tax on that.

If they do end up on time to collect  I’m wondering if they can just set up attachment to my wages so I don’t forget or not late in paying as I don’t really do Direct Debits and with attachment they are guaranteed to get it on time before I even see the money.

They cannot set up an attachment to your wages easily, you can set up a standing order to pay instead
