Only for some, they keep putting it off ( chickening out really, as should have all been completed in 2006) but Whitehaven though small got switched off this Autumn and the switchoffs will go roughly anticlockwise round the country with Border region next year ( was going to be this year), then Granada etc ending up in Tyne Tees in 2012.;)

But they cannot free up any bandwidth until all area's are switched over, and then most of it will be auctioned off by the government.

I don't think your " future proofing " claim will hold water by then.

Nothing is totally futureproof hence the OP has quotation marks. ;) perhaps most "futureproof" would have been better wording.

So you think the Broadcast companies are going to leave millions of pounds worth of high power transmitters that power BBC 1, BBC2 ITV CH4 and 5, to "rust" away for 4 or 5 years whilst continuing to run the very low power Freeview in the corner on "batteries" ? I think re-engineering will be in progress from the start, if not only to improve the current low level Freeview transmission power and with extra channels. A frequency was never left cold (off) or illegal transmissions moved in.
