We once had about 2cm of ice in the work car park.

The guy who had a Maserati couldn't get his car out, or just didn't know how to not go too heavy on the accelerator in those conditions. Of course, nobody sniggered at his predicament.
  • @diystarter7 I have a W124 and just don't drive it when the roads are icy.  Your experience with winter tyres has made me think I should try them, too.  Thanks for posting.

OP, how did you get on with the all-seasons tyres?

Winter tyres are a legal requirement in many countries in continental Europe. When you see how they all manage to drive perfectly normally (albeit slower) in snow/ice/sleet/slush you realise how much difference they make. Their ungritted roads don't grind to a halt after it snows.

Yep, from October 15 to April 15 in the Italian alpine region where I used to live.. OR snow chains on board. Many people have both. The second hand car I bought had a pair of unused chains in the back but as I am a skier and worked in some mountain village primary schools outside the main town I immediately got proper winter tyres on a separate set of rims. They make a tremendous difference and I didn't miss any days teaching (or skiing ;-) )..

Now retired with a new model rear wheel drive car right on the south coast I haven't bothered with snow tyres as I can manage to avoid driving if it ever gets that bad. That decision will be changed if I ever decide to drive out again for another winter holiday.
