Vigil at death bed

I dont think the employer has to accommodate the situation.
That being said, they should. I have worked for a few large and small companies over the years and all of them have basically said, take the time you need and then have a quick "wellbeing" catch up call maybe once a week or fortnight just to see how you doing - although in reality it is probably more of a call to get an idea if you will be back next week or not.
I know when my grandad was on his death bed, I was in the hospital for about 10 nights. In all honesty I have no idea how many nights as they all just merge into one. I think I would have told my employer where to shove their job if they wanted me to check in every day. Thats the sort of thing you remember.
Have you/your partner asked if you can arrange a weekly call rather than daily as its not really top of your priority list at the moment?
