Carpenter is creating a little cupboard under our new bath. This thing is attached to the bath, what's it for and can we remove it? The bath is German if that's a reason for it being there

It's steel. We did wonder if it could be that.

I'd expect any metalic bath to have a robust terminal for making an earth connection... in the absence of anything else then that's probably what it is intended for.
  • As above, earth connection point.

Looks like an earth connection point, if it's a steel bath? Hope this helps.

There's no way that is an earth connection. It wouldn't be in that place, that large nor black powder coated (if it's metal). It would be simply a small tab with an M6 bolt hole somewhere at the bottom. Baths should not be earthed/bonded as this would make them more dangerous being clamped to earth (in the event you touched it whilst being connected to a live conductor like a broken hairdryer). They are best left floating in the same way you don't earth your door handles.

Furthermore steel baths are enameled and enamel is an insulator.

My guess is it's a clip for a side panel or something used in it's shipping, handling or installation. Not an earth.

If it were meant to be earthed, it would have a clearly marked connector something like this (although that is an image of an earth strap used to bond pipework etc).

I vaguely wondered whether the legs had been attached to it during transit?

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

    It is, just googled it

as some are using plastic pipes etc this is why it is place.

however do your own research and those that fit a new bath and are competent should know what to do

    Thanks

I agree,  it doesn't look like an "earth connection point". Far too complicated in terms of number and shape of holes.
And this par seems to be neither welded, not bolted to the bath. It looks like it sits on some other smaller piece fixed to the bath.
  • This is precisely why you should not use forums such as this when enquiring about electrical safety within a bathroom. I know what it is. And I know what it is used for. Do you know a qualified electrician you could ask?
