Ninth Anniversary Combo Breaker
My son died 18th January 2016, and as far as we were aware, we sorted his affairs. I remember him having a payday loan (can’t remember the name) which they wrote off when we sent them the death certificate and we’ve never heard from them since.

Fast forward to today and out of the blue we’ve had a letter through the post, to my address (son rented a flat) The letter is from a payday loan company and says the last payment was made on 16th Feb 2016 and that the agreement has a balance of £1,520.48. The letter however, says “The amount you are overdue by is £0;00”

What do I do?

  • You could probably ignore it as it's outside the 6 years they have to enforce the debt but maybe prepare a statute barred letter (Debt Camel has one) just in case they come back to you

    My condolences on your loss

    So sorry for your loss.

Were your names on the letter at all? Even if they were, it wasn't your debt so you can't be made to be responsible.

But the fact that they put “The amount you are overdue by is £0.00" makes me think that they have written it off as initially thought.

Ignore it. It's not your debt, and it's statute barred anyway.

So sorry to hear of your loss - in spite of the time that has passed I imagine it is still every bit as difficult now.

As others have said - simply ignore in the first instance. If they hassle you again ask on the Debt Free Wannabe board before doing anything as it may be that the statute barred letter is not the best way forwards here.
