Some items are cheaper if i join Amazon Prime but i don't want prime so can i join and get my items cheaper and cancel without paying a dime or would they penalise me for using it just to do this?

Items shouldnt be any cheaper but postage would be
You can signup for a free trial of Prime, buy what you want, then cancel the trial. Nothing to penalise you for. If you've already has a trial in the last 12 months then you'd need to pay for 1 months membership or wait until you are outside the 12 months and sign up for a new trial.2
